Steve Schult: Since this is the 2-7 variant, how important is it to start with the 7 and 2 in your hand? Badugi Mike is strong, but his five card draw is a bit weak as he can draw straight lines. How important is it to have a strong two-way draw?
Randy Ohel: It’s always important to start with deuce, but even in a triple draw, 7 isn’t super important.
SS: I thought you wanted to draw on both the low ends.
RO: I mean, that’s great. But it’s not like “Oh, you can’t play a hand because there’s no 7 in it.” But it’s like “Oh, you can’t play that hand because it doesn’t have 2 in it.”
SS: Does deuce the requirements necessary to initiate hand selection?
RO: You have a much weaker hand. You probably have a hand that you can open late or defend a blind man or something. You will not have a hand from the front that doesn’t have 2 in it. Unless you have a clapping hand or something like a strong four card hand.
SS: Then what can be played from the front, if we assume the full six-hand game?
RO: You’re looking for the same starting hand with a triple draw, but with three different settings. But you can play something like 2-5-8, which you won’t play in three draws. Basically, you are looking for three cards to make eight or better three different suit. You want to have the deuce there, but you can play like 3-4-5 because it’s a really fine three card. There are different types of hands you can play, but for the most part, hands are quite similar.
